There are three most common ways to make your staircase look great.
Install carpet over existing stairs and semi-gloss white or oak trim along the stairs.
Replace existing steps for oak steps (oak steps can be stained to a desired color), paint risers semi-gloss white and install semi-gloss white trim along the stairs.
Replace existing steps and risers for oak still without modifying the original staircase structure. This looks best with oak trim.
Depending on the location, most staircases have an option of being opened up from one side (in some cases from both). Staircase opening gives a classy, open, more spacious feel to a basement and becomes a focal point instead of something you wanted to hide behind another wall. Even when you’re walking down the stairs, it doesn’t feel like you’re entering a basement. See some popular options below.
Drywall opening is easiest to do therefore it is least expensive. The rule “You get what you pay for.” applies.
Drywall opening that is finished in semi-gloss white or oak. (Usually matching rest of trims in a basement.)
Oak rail with semi-gloss white or oak balusters or tempered glass balusters. (Style choices are almost unlimited and vary in prices.
